Why families choose girls-only basketball
The single biggest thing we hear from parents of girls is that in coed programs, their daughter didn’t take enough shots. Not because coaches didn’t try — because in mixed groups, girls often defer to boys who play more aggressively. Girls-only programs change that dynamic before it becomes a pattern.
This isn’t about who’s better at basketball. It’s about who feels comfortable making a mistake in front of the group. Nine times out of ten, that’s the single factor that decides whether a girl loves the sport or quits it.
What confidence looks like in a girls-only room
Girls speak up during drills. They ask coaches questions instead of nodding along. They correct each other on form. In coed groups, that behaviour tends to fade around age 8 or 9. In girls-only groups, it stays.
How the environment changes coaching
Coaches call on every player. There’s no “loud kid getting all the reps” dynamic. The pace of feedback slows down enough for every girl to try, fail, adjust, and try again — the loop that actually builds skill. Group sizes are set to keep touches high.
Who this is best for
New players who want a lower-stakes first season. Girls who tried coed and stopped enjoying it. Experienced players who want to lead. Sisters or friends signing up together. If your daughter is under 4, start with toddler basketball or preschool basketball.
Girls-only programs run at all our venues at different points in the year. The map below shows where. If you’re still exploring formats, see basketball training, game day, or basketball camp. To see every program at every Mississauga venue, visit our Mississauga home page.

Frequently Asked Questions
What ages are HoopStars girls basketball programs for?
HoopStars girls basketball programs run for ages 2 through 14, grouped by age and skill level so every girl gets age-appropriate coaching alongside peers at a similar stage.
Are all the classes girls-only?
Yes — programs shown on this page are all-girls environments. Coed programs are listed separately on our city and program pages so parents can choose the setting that fits their daughter best.
Which locations offer girls basketball?
Girls-only programs run across our GTA venues. Use the location filter in the hero to see programs by city — Mississauga, Brampton, Etobicoke, and Burlington all host girls programs when in season.
What is the difference between girls training and girls game day?
Training focuses on skills, drills, and fundamentals in a coaching-led format. Game Day is a structured, game-based format where girls apply their skills in short scrimmages with referees. Both formats keep the same professional HoopStars coaching.
Does my daughter need experience to join?
No experience required. Our coaches adapt drills to each player, so girls who have never held a basketball train comfortably alongside girls who have played before.
How do I register my daughter for a girls basketball program?
Pick a program from the list on this page, click Register, and follow the checkout. You can register without creating an account first — everything happens on one page.
