What to know before signing up a 2 or 3 year old
Toddler basketball works, but it works differently than most parents expect. There’s no scoreboard, no scrimmages, and no expectation that your child will look like a “little basketball player” for the first several weeks. That’s by design.
The purpose at this age isn’t basketball skill — it’s the foundation everything else sits on: listening, sharing space, and feeling comfortable in a group activity led by an adult who isn’t you.
Attention span is the real challenge
The average 2 year old focuses on one activity for about three minutes. A 3 year old, maybe five. Our classes rotate between short activities every few minutes so kids never hit the “I’m bored” wall. Parents who expect a 45-minute class to be one continuous drill are usually surprised, in a good way.
What the first class usually looks like
Most kids observe for the first fifteen minutes. Some warm up faster and jump straight in. Both are fine. Coaches don’t push toddlers who aren’t ready to participate — they let it happen at each child’s pace, usually by week two or three.
How to tell if your toddler will enjoy it
If your child likes music-and-movement classes, follows simple instructions from adults besides you, and doesn’t fall apart when other kids get a turn first — they’re ready. If any of those are still developing, that’s okay too. Many toddlers grow into the class over the season.
The map below shows our toddler-friendly venues. If your child is 4 or 5, see preschool basketball instead. Once your child is ready for a full session, look at weekly training or a week at basketball camp. To see every program available in Mississauga, visit our Mississauga home page.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is 2 or 3 too young for basketball?
Not with HoopStars. Our toddler programs are built specifically for ages 2 and 3 — play-based, patient, and paced for very young children. Every activity is designed to build coordination, listening, and confidence, not to scrimmage.
What does a toddler basketball class actually look like?
Short warm-ups, small-sided drills with age-appropriate balls and hoops, and lots of movement. Coaches use games, songs, and cues that hold a toddler's attention. Classes are shorter than older age groups.
Do I need to stay during class?
Parents are welcome to stay throughout every toddler class. Some children are ready to play independently within a few weeks; others prefer a parent nearby the whole session. Both are completely fine.
What should my toddler wear or bring?
Comfortable athletic clothes, indoor running shoes with a non-marking sole, and a water bottle. HoopStars provides the basketballs, hoops, and everything else. No prior gear needed.
How is toddler basketball different from a regular class?
Group size is smaller, activities are shorter, and coaches are trained to work with the attention span of a 2- or 3-year-old. The focus is fun and fundamentals — dribbling, listening, and simple hand-eye drills — not competitive play.
Can boys and girls both attend toddler basketball?
Yes — most HoopStars toddler classes are coed. Girls-only options are also available on our Girls Basketball page.
