How preschool basketball builds real skills
Ages 4 and 5 are when kids can genuinely start learning basketball — not just moving around with a ball. They can hold a stance long enough to dribble twice in a row. They can catch a soft pass without closing their eyes. Small wins, but real ones.
The trick at this age is making the learning feel like games instead of drills. If a 4 year old realizes they’re “practicing,” they check out. If they think they’re playing, they’ll do the same drill for twenty minutes and ask to do it again.
What independence looks like in the gym
By mid-season, most preschoolers stop looking back at parents between drills. They line up on their own. They fetch the ball when it rolls away without being asked. That shift from “parent nearby” to “part of the group” is often bigger for confidence than any basketball skill they pick up.
How we teach skills without calling them skills
Follow-the-leader dribbling. Target-throwing at cones instead of “passing practice.” Shooting on hoops at the right height so kids actually score, which they remember and want to repeat. Every drill has a real basketball purpose — kids just don’t hear it that way.
When kids are ready for the next age group
Children who can complete a full class without needing a coach to redirect them, follow a two-step instruction on the first ask, and stay engaged in a small-sided game — those kids are usually ready to move up to weekly training after one preschool season. Some take longer. Both are normal. When they’re ready to try a real short game, look at game day.
The map below shows every venue running preschool programs this season. If your child is younger than 4, start with toddler basketball. When school is out, basketball camp works well for preschoolers too. For every program at every venue, see our Mississauga home page.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is 4 the right age to start basketball?
Yes — 4 is a strong age to begin. Kids at 4 and 5 are ready for a bit more structure than toddlers, and HoopStars introduces dribbling, passing, and simple team activities in a way that stays fun.
How is preschool basketball different from toddler basketball?
Preschoolers get more real basketball skills — dribbling with control, simple passes, shooting on adjusted hoops, and short team activities. Toddler classes focus more on coordination and listening; preschool classes start layering skills on top.
My child is in JK or SK — is this the right program?
Yes. HoopStars preschool basketball is designed for the JK/SK cohort (ages 4–5). Class sizes and skill expectations match where kids are at this age.
What skills will my child learn?
Ball handling and dribbling basics, simple passing, shooting on age-appropriate hoops, listening to a coach, and the concept of playing with teammates. Nothing gets pushed before a child is ready.
Where can we play?
Preschool programs run across our GTA venues. Use the location filter above to see which HoopStars venues are hosting preschool programs this season.
